Winter Trimming

There are countless benefits to winter trimming versus trimming during the growing season.  Listed below are the most common reasons we trim trees.

  • Trimming branches away from objects.
  • Reducing the height or sides of the canopy.
  • Lighten the ends of the branches to reduce snow and wind loads.
  • Pruning for proper branch structure and removing crossing limbs.
  • Pruning for a larger fruit production.
  • Removing dead or weak branches.

Each of these tasks can be efficiently completed during the winter season – and oftentimes it’s easier without foliage.

During the normal growing season, leaves pull waterwinter tree trimming from the roots through transpiration.  The leaves also produce energy from photosynthesis, sending that energy to parts of the tree that need it most.  As winter sets in, the leaves fall off, completing energy production and ending nearly all water flow from the roots to the canopy.  This few-month period gives the tree a respite, allowing it to produce a fresh set of leaves for the following year.

Occasionally when trimming during the growing season, large amounts of energy-producing foliage must be removed, and it can shock the tree.  Winter trimming lessens the chance of shock and creates a more relaxed environment for the tree.

Trimming during the winter season allows trees to come back from their respite to a cleaner, more efficient environment.
